Data storage units measure the amount of digital information that can be stored or transferred. The base unit is the byte (8 bits). From there, storage scales up through kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), and terabytes (TB). Understanding these units is essential when buying storage devices, interpreting download speeds, setting email attachment limits, or comparing the sizes of files, databases, and cloud storage plans.

All data size conversions on this page use the binary prefix standard: 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, 1 GB = 1,024 MB, and 1 TB = 1,024 GB. This is the traditional computing standard used by operating systems when reporting file sizes. Note that storage device manufacturers sometimes use the decimal standard (1 KB = 1,000 bytes) to make their capacities appear larger — which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as slightly less in your operating system.

These converters are used when planning storage infrastructure and estimating how many files fit on a drive; when interpreting internet connection speeds (which are typically measured in megabits per second, not megabytes); when comparing cloud storage plan sizes; and when optimizing databases and file systems where the difference between MB and GB can matter for performance and cost.

A common source of confusion: internet speeds use bits (Mbps = megabits per second), while file sizes use bytes. There are 8 bits in 1 byte, so to estimate how long a file will take to download, divide the file size in megabytes by the speed in megabits and multiply by 8. For example, a 1 GB file (1,024 MB × 8 = 8,192 Mb) on a 100 Mbps connection takes about 81.9 seconds.
